Raffaello Hotel, in the Gold Coast district (just off the Magnificent Mile), has always boasted one of the best locations in downtown Chicago, and it can now add a new feather to its cap. DETAILS magazine, in their February 2013 issue reviewing the Best New Bars in America, has named Drumbar (Raffaello’s sleek rooftop bar) the Best New Chicago Lounge.
Raffaello Hotel underwent extensive renovations of all their guestrooms in 2006, bringing it up to snuff with some of the other hot hotels in downtown Chicago, but it still couldn’t compete with the other trendy Chicago hotel bars. All that changed in the summer of 2012 with the opening of their rooftop lounge Drumbar, which proved to be the cherry on top of their renovation efforts.
Drumbar sits 200 feet up on the 18th floor of the Raffaello Hotel, and offers guests a warm, comfortable interior lounge (self-described as “Miami meets Speakeasy”) and 1,500 sq ft outdoor terrace with amazing city and lake views. Like any city rooftop bar, the best views often go to the highest bidder (i.e. those willing to spend on bottle service), but even without a birds-eye view, this is still a remarkable lounge.
If molecular mixology is your thing, you’ll be happy to know that Craig Schoettler has joined the ranks at Drumbar, following his controversial firing at Aviary.
What to expect:
– Unique atmosphere with dark wood and classic speakeasy feel
– Quiet during the day, but gets loud as crowd grows late at night
– Guests are generally well-dressed, high-spenders
– Pricey, but not ridiculously so (cocktails start around $13, beers start around $5)
– Great views, but generally taken by the high spenders during peak hours
